The Boiler Went In The First Winter

You read the quote twice and then did the arithmetic a third time anyway.

You knew after the first read. The number was clear and it was not ambiguous and you understood immediately what it meant. And you still went back and did it again, slowly, as though a different answer might be available if you were more careful.

There is not one. You cannot pay it.

Four months in this house. You are still finding out where the light switches are. There are boxes in the back bedroom that have not been opened and probably will not be until spring.

And then, in the second week of a cold snap, the thing that heats the house stopped.

Now here is what I actually want to talk about, and it is not the money, because I do not know your situation and I am not going to pretend I have a solution for it.

I want to talk about the thought you had at about eleven o'clock that night.

You will not have said it to anybody. You may not have fully formed it. But somewhere in there was a small cold question with a shape something like: should we have done this. Or: is this what we get. Or, if you are somebody who prays, a version that was harder to look at directly.

That thought is the subject of this article.

Because a repair bill is a repair bill and it will be dealt with somehow, badly or slowly or with help. But a person who has started to read their own misfortune as a verdict has picked up something that will do considerably more damage over the next ten years than a boiler ever could.

The timing is doing the work

Let me name what makes this one different from an ordinary expense, because there have been expenses before and none of them produced that eleven o'clock question.

It is the timing. Four months in. First winter. The one thing that heats the place.

A mind looks at that and cannot help arranging it into a sentence, and the sentence it reaches for is that something is being said. Nobody teaches us to do that and everybody does it.

You have a mind that arranges coincidence into meaning, and that habit has never once made you superstitious or weak in faith. It is written in John 9 that the disciples looked at a man's misfortune and immediately asked whose fault it was, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody doing the same arithmetic at eleven at night.

And notice that the question the disciples asked was not a stupid one by the standards of their day. It was the ordinary reading. Something has gone wrong, therefore somebody did something. That was the available explanation, and they reached for it in front of the man himself.

Jesus does not soften it, and He does not agree with it. He removes it.

You were never handed the version of God that runs a house on merit, and no broken thing in your life has ever once been a bill for something you did. John 9 has the question asked out loud and answered with a plain no, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps that answer standing in a cold house in the second week of a cold snap.

Neither hath this man sinned

Here is the exchange, and I want you to see how directly it is refused.

And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents. (John 9:2, King James Version)

Neither.

That is the whole of the correction and it takes one word. Not this man. Not his parents. The frame is wrong, and Jesus does not negotiate inside it.

And notice what He does not do afterward. He does not supply a different culprit. He does not explain the mechanism. He says the works of God should be made manifest and then He goes and does something about the actual problem in front of Him.

You have been given a one word answer to the question you asked at eleven o'clock, and the frame you asked it in has never once been the frame God works in. The written word has Jesus refusing the whole reading rather than reassigning the blame, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been saying neither in your kitchen for four days.

I want to be careful here, because there is a cheap version of this that would not help you. The cheap version says God has a good reason and you will understand it later. That is the same machine with a nicer paint job: it still says the boiler means something about you.

John 9 does not do that. It takes the question away.

You are free to have a broken boiler that means nothing at all about you, and a piece of bad timing has never once been a message. John 9 says neither, plainly, and refuses to supply a replacement culprit, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds that line when you are tired.
