I Have Started This Four Times

The first one was the coffee tin, which lasted about seven months.

The second one was a proper account with a name on it, and that went nearly two years and then the truck needed a transmission.

The third one you do not talk about.

And the fourth one started in January with real intent, and it went sideways in April for a reason that was not even dramatic, and it has been sitting at almost nothing since.

Now here is what I want to get at, and it is not the saving.

Somewhere between the third one and the fourth one, you stopped thinking of these as four separate circumstances and started thinking of them as one long piece of evidence.

Evidence about you.

You would not say it out loud in those words. What you would say is that you are not much good at this, or that you have never been able to hold onto money, or that some people can do it and you are not one of them. All of those are the same sentence with the edges filed off.

And that sentence is why there has not been a fifth one. Not the money. A man who believes the problem is the man does not start again, because starting again is just arranging the next piece of evidence.

Four events, or one verdict

Let me lay them back out the way they actually happened, because a pile is not a pattern and one has been read here as the other.

The tin lasted seven months and ended when your daughter needed something. The account ran nearly two years and ended when a transmission went, in the same month the rent on the house went up. The third one ended the way it ended. The fourth stopped in April.

Four endings. Four different causes. Not one of them was a man deciding he could not be bothered.

You have four stops with four separate reasons, and four honest interruptions have never once added up to one thing wrong with you. The Holy Spirit is the one who has watched every one of those four and drawn no conclusion about the man, and it is written in Galatians 6 that we are not to be weary in well doing.

And watch what the verdict does, because this is the mechanism and it is worth seeing plainly.

A man who believes he is the problem cannot start again, because starting is now a test. If he starts and it works, he was wrong about himself, which he does not expect. If he starts and it stops, he gets a fifth piece of evidence.

So the sensible move, the one you have been making since April, is not to start. That is not laziness. That is a man protecting himself from a fifth verdict, and it is the most understandable thing in the world.

You have been protecting yourself from another test rather than avoiding the work, and there has never once been a version of this where the not starting was about effort. Galatians 6 tells a tired man not to be weary in well doing without once asking why he got tired, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps that instruction free of blame.

In due season, and not before

Here is the verse, and I want to be careful about a promise it does not make.

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:9, King James Version)

Now, I have heard that verse used as a guarantee about money and it is not one, and I am not going to hand it to you that way. Paul is writing about doing good to people, about sowing to the Spirit, about the long unglamorous work of a life. He is not promising a deposit.

What he is describing, and this is the part that is exactly your situation, is the specific tiredness that comes from doing a right thing for a long time with nothing visible to show.

That is the tiredness in your house. It is not laziness and it is not a character flaw. It is the thing Paul names.

You are carrying a tiredness that scripture has a name for, and the exhaustion of doing a right thing unseen has never once been evidence of a weak man. The Holy Spirit is the one who put a name on it rather than a diagnosis, and the written word addresses that weariness directly and treats it as ordinary.

And notice what Paul does with it. He does not tell them to feel differently. He does not tell them to examine their hearts. He says, in effect: keep going, this is a known condition, do not let it stop you.

That is an instruction you can actually follow, because it does not require you to first become a different man.

You are able to keep going as the exact man you already are, and no verse anywhere has ever once required a change of character before it would let somebody start again. Galatians 6 says let us not be weary in well doing and asks for nothing else first, and the Spirit of God is the one holding a man up under it.
