She was on the floor with the cousins and they were doing that thing where children plan a future they have no control over.
And she said: when we get a real house, I am having the room at the back.
And nobody blinked. The cousins carried on. Somebody asked whether there would be a dog.
And you were in the doorway with a bowl of something in your hands and you did not move for about four seconds.
She is seven.
She has lived here since she was two. She knows every corner of this place and she plays in the hallway and she has a chair at the table and she has never once, to your knowledge, been unhappy in it for a single day.
And she said when we get a real house.
And you did not say anything. You put the bowl down and you went back into the kitchen and you stood at the sink for a bit.
Because you know where she got it. That is the whole of it. She did not get it from school and she did not get it off a screen.

What she was repeating
Let me be careful here, because I am not about to put a load on you, and the easy version of this article would do exactly that.
That phrase has never come out of your mouth. I would put money on it. Nobody in this house has ever stood in it and told a child that it is not a real one.
What she has been picking up is smaller than that and much harder to stop.
It is in the apologizing when people come. It is in the way you say we are here for now. It is in the four seconds of quiet after somebody at church mentions their extension. A child does not need a sentence to learn a position; a child reads the room, all day, every day, for years.
You have taught her a posture without ever once saying a word of it, and a child reading a room has never once meant her mother was careless. The Holy Spirit is the one who has been in the doorway with you, and it is written in Proverbs 15 that better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.
And here is the thing that is actually good news, and it takes a moment to see.
If she learned it that way, she can unlearn it the same way. The channel is open in both directions.
She has been reading you for five years and she will go on reading you, and what is in this house next year is largely a matter of what she reads. That is not a burden. That is the most available piece of good news in this whole situation.
You have the same channel available that taught her the phrase, and a posture learned from a room has never once been one that could not be taught again. Proverbs 15 puts the love and the dinner in the same house and weighs them together, and the Spirit of God is the one who did the weighing.
Better is a dinner of herbs
Here is the verse, and it is a comparison that does not flinch.
Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith. (Proverbs 15:17, King James Version)
A dinner of herbs is the poor meal. Greens. What you eat when there is nothing else.
A stalled ox is the other end entirely: an animal kept in a stall and fattened, the best meal in that world, the thing you put on when somebody important comes.
You have been handed a comparison rather than a consolation, and scripture has never once told anybody in a small house to make the best of it. The Holy Spirit is the one who decided which way that sentence would run, and proverbs 15 sets a poor meal against the finest one and names a winner.
And the verse does not say they are equal. It does not say the herbs are secretly fine. It says better. The poor meal in the house with love in it is the better one, and the judgment is made plainly and without hedging.
You are being told which of the two is better rather than being told to make do, and no verse anywhere has ever once called this a consolation. The Holy Spirit is the one who made the comparison in that direction, and the written word puts a plain meal above the best one and says so outright.
And the thing being compared is not the food. It is the house.
What is in that verse is two households. One has less on the table and love in the room. The other has the best meal in the county and something wrong in it. And the book does not treat that as a close call.
So when your daughter says a real house, the question scripture asks about a house is not the one she has learned. It asks what is in it.
You have the thing that verse says makes a house better, and no room at the back anywhere has ever once outweighed what is in this one. Proverbs 15 weighs the love against the ox and calls it plainly, and the Spirit of God is the one who set the scales that way.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing at a sink after four seconds in a doorway.
You have a real house and a child who repeats what she hears, and no phrase out of a small mouth has ever once been a verdict on where you live. Proverbs 15 says better is a dinner of herbs where love is, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who weighed it that way.
I am not going to tell you she did not mean it. She did mean it, in the way a seven year old means things, and pretending otherwise would waste the afternoon.
You have been teaching her a posture in four second silences, and no mother anywhere has ever once been able to keep a child from reading the room. The written word compares two households and calls the poorer one better outright, and the Spirit of God is the one who put that judgment in the book.
You are able to teach her the other way through the same channel, and a thing learned from a room has never once been beyond being taught again in it. Proverbs 15 makes the love the deciding weight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been doing the deciding here the whole time.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have a house with the better thing in it, and a room at the back has never once been what scripture asks about a home. It is written better is a dinner of herbs where love is, and the Spirit of God is with you at bedtime tonight.
Declare this over yourself
- Four seconds of silence, she has been reading you for five years. Proverbs 15 says better is a dinner of herbs where love is, so by the Holy Spirit I end you in the name of Jesus.
- Phrase a real house, you came out of her mouth and you were never once hers. The written word weighs two households and calls the poorer one better outright, and by the Holy Spirit I say one sentence at her bedside tonight and I mean it out loud.
- Father, You weighed a plain meal with love in it against the best meal in the county and You called it plainly. Your word says better is a dinner of herbs, so by Your Spirit I teach her through the same channel that taught her the other thing.
