You keep a towel in the car now, rolled, under the passenger seat where nobody would notice it.
That is the detail that told you something had gone on too long. Not the first week, when it was funny. Not the second, when your wife started going to her sister's on Thursdays. The towel, and the fact that you had thought about where to put it so that your brother would not see it when he got in the car.
It has been thirty one days.
The boiler stopped in the middle of a Tuesday and the quote came back on the Thursday and you have been managing since, which is the word you use in your own head. Kettles for the dishes. The gym membership you took out that you do not use for anything except the showers. Your brother's house twice a week, where you say you were passing.
He has never asked. You have got good at it. You say you were passing, and he says come in, and you have coffee and you talk about his work and about the football, and you go and wash in his bathroom and come out and nobody has said one word about anything.
And the reason you have not told him, which you know and would rather not look at, is that you are certain of what he would do.
He would offer. Within about four seconds. And then you would be a man being helped by his younger brother, and something in you would rather take thirty one days of a towel under a car seat than be that for four seconds.

What is actually being protected
Let me name what is actually being protected here, because it is not your finances and it is not your brother.
It is a picture of yourself.
In that picture there is a man who has it in hand. The older one. The house, the job, the one people come to, and that has been true for long enough that it stopped feeling like a role and started feeling like a fact.
And a man with no hot water for a month is not in that picture, so the man with no hot water has to be kept out of the room.
You have been guarding a picture and calling it dignity, and a month without hot water has never once changed what kind of man you are. It is written in Psalm 46 that God is a very present help in trouble, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in a brother's bathroom with you twice a week for a month.
And notice what the guarding costs, because it is not free and you have been paying it daily.
You have had thirty one days of a conversation that is not real. Your brother thinks you have been passing. He thinks this is a man dropping in more often, and he is glad about it, and he has no idea that you are standing in his kitchen holding something with both hands.
You have been in your brother's house twice a week without ever once being in the room with him. Psalm 46 calls God a very present help, which is a phrase about nearness rather than about rescue, and the Spirit of God is the one who thinks presence is the thing worth naming.
A very present help
Here is the verse, and I want to stay on one word in it.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1, King James Version)
Present.
Not distant help. Not eventual help. Present, meaning here, in the room, at the time of the trouble rather than at the end of it.
And the trouble in that psalm is not small. The next two verses are about the earth being removed and the mountains being carried into the middle of the sea, which is a way of saying: even then. Even when the whole arrangement of things comes apart.
So the picture is not of a God who turns up when a man has sorted himself out enough to be presentable. It is a God who is already standing in the middle of the thing while it is still going on.
You have a God who arrives before anything is fixed, and thirty one days of a broken boiler has never once been a reason for Him to wait outside. The written word calls Him a very present help in trouble rather than after it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been present in the car with the towel under the seat.
Now let me say something about your brother, and I am not going to tell you to take his money.
That is not the assignment and it may not be the right thing and I do not know your family. What I will tell you is that a decision got made on his behalf without consulting him, which is that he cannot be told a true thing about his own brother.
He might offer. You might refuse. That whole exchange is a normal thing between two men who love each other, and it takes about a minute, and you have spent thirty one days avoiding a minute.
You have decided what your brother can be told, and thirty one days of a rolled up towel has never once been better than one awkward minute in a kitchen. Psalm 46 puts God in the middle of the trouble rather than at the end of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is not embarrassed by a man in the middle of one.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man with a towel rolled under a car seat.
You have been managing something alone that was never meant to be managed alone, and letting somebody know has never once been the same as asking them for money. Psalm 46 calls God a very present help in trouble, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is present rather than waiting.
I am not going to tell you the money is coming. It may not, and it is not mine to say, and a promise like that is a bill with God's name on it.
You have been keeping a true thing out of a room you stand in twice a week, and thirty one days of that has never once been dignity. The written word puts God in the middle of the earth being removed rather than at the far end of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is not waiting for you to be presentable.
You are the same man your brother has always known, and a boiler has never once had the authority to change who somebody's older brother is. Psalm 46 keeps the help present during the trouble, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding that steady in you.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You were never required to carry this quietly, and nothing in scripture has ever once asked a man to be helped only after he stopped needing it. It is written that God is a very present help in trouble, and the Spirit of God is with you in your brother's kitchen.
Declare this over yourself
- Picture of the man who has it in hand, you have cost me a month of real conversation with my own brother. Psalm 46 says God is a very present help in trouble, so by the Holy Spirit I put you down in the name of Jesus.
- Towel rolled under the passenger seat, you are the shape of thirty one days of hiding. The written word puts God in the middle of the trouble rather than after it, and by the Holy Spirit I say the one true sentence in that kitchen and I stop there.
- Father, You are called a very present help and the word present is the whole of it. Your word says You are with us while the mountains are being carried into the sea, so by Your Spirit I stop waiting to be presentable before I am helped.
