I Thanked Him And Immediately Asked For The Next Thing

You noticed it on the first night in the house, kneeling by a bed that was still in pieces.

You said thank you. You meant it, completely, with everything in you.

And then, in the same breath, without anything in between, you said: and Lord, about the kitchen.

You heard yourself do it. That is what makes this hard. It was not unconscious. You caught it mid sentence and you stopped, and you knelt there for a second, and then you finished the prayer anyway because what else does a person do.

And it has been going on since. It happens at the table, and it happens on the way to work, and it happened out loud at your mother's in front of people.

Thank you for this house, and Lord, about the roof.

Thank you for this house, and now about the room at the back.

And somewhere in the last few weeks a sentence has arrived and settled in you and has not moved, and the sentence says: I do not think I am actually grateful.

What the pattern actually is

Let me look at the pattern rather than at the heart, because I think the wrong one has been under examination.

Four years went into praying for a house.

Four years of asking. That is not a small habit, that is a groove worn deep, and a groove that deep does not stop being a groove because the thing arrived. The mouth goes where it has been going for four years.

So the ask is not coming from ingratitude. It is coming from practice.

You have four years of a good habit arriving at the wrong moment, and faithful asking has never once turned into a fault because the thing came. Psalm 103 tells a soul to forget not, which is an instruction rather than an accusation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put it in that form.

You have a groove worn by four years of asking, and a mouth that follows it has never once been a report on the heart behind it. The Holy Spirit is the one who was kneeling beside a bed in pieces on the first night, and it is written in Psalm 103 that we are to forget not all his benefits.

And notice what you did at your mother's, because it tells you something good.

You caught it. Out loud, in front of people, mid sentence. That is not what an ungrateful woman does. An ungrateful woman does not notice, because there is nothing in her that objects.

The catching is the evidence, and it is evidence in the other direction entirely.

You have been catching yourself, and a woman who notices the turn has never once been a woman with nothing in her that wanted to stay. Psalm 103 tells the soul to bless the Lord and then instructs it not to forget, which assumes a soul that forgets, and the Spirit of God is the one who wrote the instruction to exactly that soul.

Forget not all his benefits

Here is the verse, and who it is spoken to is the whole comfort of it.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. (Psalm 103:2, King James Version)

David is talking to himself.

That is the shape of the whole psalm. Bless the Lord, O my soul. He is not instructing a congregation. He is addressing his own insides, out loud, and telling them what to do, which is what a person does when their insides are not doing it on their own.

And what does he have to tell them? Forget not.

Which means the soul being addressed forgets. That is the assumption inside the instruction, and it is written by a man who wrote about eighty other psalms and knew God better than most people who have ever lived.

You have a soul that needs telling, and the greatest worshipper in the book has never once been described as one whose soul did it automatically. The Holy Spirit is the one who preserved the instruction rather than an example of it going well, and the written word has a man instructing his own insides out loud.

And notice the word benefits.

Plural. Specific. The psalm goes straight on to list them: forgiveth all thine iniquities, healeth all thy diseases, redeemeth thy life from destruction. Named things, one after another.

He does not tell his soul to be grateful in general. He points at particular items, by name, out loud, one at a time.

You have specific things to point at rather than a mood to produce, and general gratitude has never once been what that psalm was asking anybody for. Psalm 103 lists the benefits by name in the verses that follow, and the Spirit of God is the one who made it a list rather than a feeling.
