I Send Money Home Every Month

It goes out on the same day every month and you have never missed one.

Eleven years. Your mother's medicine, your brother's schooling until he finished, and now the roof on the house your father built, which is being done a section at a time because that is how it has to be done.

Nobody here knows. That is not secrecy, exactly. It has just never come up, because at work people talk about vacations and weekends and there is no natural place in a conversation to say that a fixed amount of your pay does not belong to you.

And for the first nine years you never once thought about it in connection with the deposit.

Then, about two years ago, you did the sum.

You worked out what eleven years of that money would have been if it had gone into the account instead, and the figure was large enough that you closed the app and did not open it again that night.

And ever since, there has been a sentence in you that was not there before, and it arrives most months on the day the transfer goes out. It does not accuse anybody. It just says, quietly: that is why.

Two households, one wage

Let me say plainly what has been happening here, because I do not think anybody has ever described it back to you.

That is two households, running on one income, for eleven years.

Not helping out. Not sending a bit when you can. Carrying a second household, reliably, at a fixed amount, through every month including the bad ones, while also paying rent here and putting something away.

That is not a leak in your finances. That is a second job that you are doing with money instead of hours.

You have been carrying more than one house on one wage, and a man doing that has never once been a man who fell behind. The Holy Spirit is the one who did not put a border in that sentence, and it is written in 1 Timothy 5 that a man is to provide for his own, and especially for those of his own house.

And here is what the sum you did two years ago actually measured, and it is worth being precise about it.

It measured what you would have if you had been a different man.

That is all it measured. It did not find a mistake. It compared your life to the life of a man who has the same job and no mother and no brother and no roof to finish, and it reported the difference, and then some part of you filed that difference as a loss.

You have been comparing yourself to a man who does not exist, and a figure produced by subtracting your own family has never once been a true accounting. The written word makes providing for your own the ordinary duty of a man rather than an extravagance, and the Spirit of God is the one who wrote it that way round.

Provide for his own

Here is the verse, and it is stronger than people remember.

But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. (1 Timothy 5:8, King James Version)

That is severe language, and Paul is not being careless with it. The context is widows, and specifically the question of who is responsible for an older woman with no husband.

And his answer is: her family. Her children and her grandchildren. That is the first line of care, before the church, before anybody.

Now I want to be careful here, because a verse like that can be turned into a whip, and I am not handing it to you as one. I am not going to tell you that you must send more, or that stopping would be a sin, or that anybody has the right to measure what you send.

I am telling you where scripture puts what you have already been doing.

You have spent eleven years doing something the written word treats as the baseline duty of a man, and doing it has never once been a thing that needed justifying. The Holy Spirit is the one who set it at that level, and first Timothy 5 makes providing for your own the plain expectation and not the exception.

And notice what is missing from the passage: any suggestion that a man who provides for his own should expect it to be made up to him.

That absence matters. There is no clause anywhere promising that God tops up the account of a man who looked after his mother. This site will not tell you that and neither will Paul, and if somebody has told you that, they gave you a bill with God's name on it.

What is there instead is a designation. This is what a man is for. Not a detour from the real work. The work.

You are doing the thing rather than delaying it, and eleven years of the roof and the medicine has never once been time taken away from your real life. First Timothy 5 names it as provision and not as generosity, and the Spirit of God is the one who refuses to file it as a deduction.
