The Offer We LostRomans 12:15

We Have To Un-Tell Everybody

This message is for the family who announced the house to everyone they know and now has to walk it back at Sunday dinner

You told everybody.

Not in a foolish way. You waited until the offer was accepted, which is what sensible people do, and then you told your mother, and telling your mother is the same as telling the entire family, and within about two hours your aunt had called to ask about the number of bedrooms.

Your father in law drove out to look at it from the road. Your sister sent a photograph of a lamp.

Your daughter told her whole class.

And then on Thursday the whole thing came apart, for a reason that has to do with paperwork and another buyer and something nobody could have moved, and now it is Friday and Sunday is coming and everybody will be there.

And what you have been doing since Thursday is not grieving. You have been writing the announcement.

You have three versions. There is the light one, where you make it into a funny story about how it all fell through and everyone laughs and moves on. There is the brisk one, where you say it in four words and change the subject to the food. And there is the one you say at about one in the morning, which is the true one, and you have already decided you will not be using that one.

We Have To Un-Tell Everybody

The second loss nobody names

I want to name the thing that is actually happening here, because I think it has been mislabeled and the label is making it heavier.

You lost a house on Thursday. That is one thing.

But what has been sitting on your chest since Thursday is not mainly the house. It is the prospect of standing in a room full of people who love you and saying out loud that a good thing they were told about is not happening.

You have been bracing for Sunday since the phone call, and dreading a room full of people who love you has never once been ingratitude. It is written in Romans 12 that we weep with them that weep, and the Spirit of God is the one who will be in that room ahead of any of you.

That is a different weight, and it has a name, and the name is exposure.

You are dreading being seen, and being seen in a disappointment has never once been the same as being diminished by it. The word tells a whole room to weep with them that weep, and the Holy Spirit is the one already at the table on Sunday before any of you get there.

And look at what the three versions are for. The light one protects them. The brisk one protects you. Both of them are ways of getting through the room without anybody having to stop and feel anything, and both of them will work, and both of them will leave you standing in the kitchen afterward with the whole thing still in your chest.

You have been rehearsing a way to be fine in front of your family, and being fine in front of people has never once been the same as being helped by them. It is written that we are to rejoice with them that do rejoice and weep with them that weep, and the Spirit of God is the one who put both halves in the same sentence.

Both halves of the same verse

Here is the line, and the second half is the one your family have not been given permission to do.

Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. (Romans 12:15, King James Version)

Look at how ordinary that instruction is.

It does not say fix them that weep. It does not say explain to them that weep. It does not say find the silver lining for them that weep. It says do the same thing they are doing, in the same room, at the same time.

That is it. That is the whole instruction.

You are being asked for nothing on Sunday except to let people do one plain thing, and needing that from them has never once been a demand. Romans 12 hands the instruction to the room rather than to you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes ordinary people able to keep it.

And notice that your family already did the first half. When you told them, they rejoiced. Your aunt called about bedrooms. Your father in law drove out to see it from the road. They were delighted with you, sincerely, without being asked twice.

They will do the second half too. They are the same people.

You have a family who already proved they can do the first half of that verse, and there has never once been any reason to think the second half is beyond them. Romans 12 puts the two together as one obligation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who will be doing the weeping with you through the people in that room.

Here is the part I really want you to hear. The light version and the brisk version both take something away from the people who love you. They take away the chance to do what that verse actually asks of them.

Your mother has been carrying you since you were born. If you walk in on Sunday with a funny story, she will laugh, and she will know, and she will not be allowed to say anything, and she will go home having been kept out.

You were given these people for exactly this kind of afternoon, and letting them close has never once been the same as burdening them. The written word hands the whole room an instruction for a moment like this one, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary family able to keep it.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a family who are dreading Sunday.

You are about to do a hard thing in front of people who love you, and needing them to see it has never once been a weakness. Romans 12 tells them to weep with them that weep, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who will be doing that through them.

I am not going to tell you what this was for. I am not going to tell you the next one is around the corner. Those are the sentences somebody at that table will reach for, and you can let them have it, because people say those out of love and not out of theology.

You have not embarrassed anybody, and telling a family about a good thing that then fell through has never once been a thing that needed an apology. The Spirit of God is the one carrying you into that room, and the written word is where you can go and read what the room is for.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You were right to tell them. You are right to tell them again. Romans 12 gives the same room the same instruction twice over, once for the good news and once for this, and the Holy Spirit is with you on Sunday.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Funny version I wrote on Thursday, you keep everybody comfortable and you cost me my own family. Romans 12 says weep with them that weep, so by the Holy Spirit I put you down before Sunday, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Dread of being seen in a disappointment, you have no authority at that table. The written word gives a whole room an instruction for exactly this afternoon, and by the Holy Spirit I say the plain sentence to one person today and I do not soften the end of it.
  3. Father, You gave us these people and they already rejoiced with us once. Your word says to weep with them that weep, and Your Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary family able to do it, so by Your Spirit I let them in on Sunday.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
